Shelob

Shelob is the ancient spider-like creature whose lair guards the passage of Cirith Ungol above Minas Morgul. She serves her own appetite rather than functioning simply as an obedient soldier in Sauron's forces.

The trap beyond the hidden stair

Gollum leads Frodo and Sam towards Shelob in the hope of recovering the Ring after she has disposed of its bearer. The tunnel’s darkness and the difficulty of the approach make ordinary movement and perception uncertain. The phial of Galadriel and Sting bring distinct kinds of assistance: preserved light and a blade that can cut what would otherwise entrap them.

Shelob catches Frodo, but Sam’s intervention prevents the result Gollum has planned. The fight turns on her own weight driving her against the blade as well as on the hobbit’s courage. Frodo’s apparently lifeless state then creates a new crisis of judgement for Sam.

A defeat whose final outcome is not narrated

Shelob retreats wounded, but the book does not provide a later scene establishing her death. A reference account should stop at that limit rather than convert an unresolved fate into a definitive killing.

Her relationship with Sauron is likewise more complicated than military subordination. He tolerates the danger she presents to intruders and feeds her appetite when it suits his rule, while she remains concerned with feeding rather than with his political ambitions. The coexistence of these purposes makes the route dangerous in a way that no orderly chain of command fully explains.

The claim of descent from Ungoliant connects this episode with the older mythology, but it does not make Shelob equal to her ancestor in power. The later story uses a surviving horror within a local passage rather than repeating the cosmic circumstances of the destruction of the Two Trees.
