Editorial Standards and Independence

Sources before certainty

Our starting points are Tolkien’s published books, edited manuscripts and letters. References identify the work and chapter or section because pagination varies by edition. A later draft does not automatically settle an earlier narrative. We identify speculation and distinguish book events from adaptations.

Original criticism

Our essays offer analysis rather than substitute versions of Tolkien’s books. New articles use paraphrase and bibliographical references rather than long quotations. Interpretive claims are presented as readings, not as newly discovered statements by Tolkien.

Independent publication

Tolkienology is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Tolkien Estate, Tolkien Trust, HarperCollins, Middle-earth Enterprises, or film and television rights holders. All rights in the original writings and licensed adaptations remain with their owners. This notice does not confer permission to reproduce protected material.

Corrections

We welcome specific corrections supported by a book, chapter or reliable bibliographical reference. Please use our contact page. Existing archive images and quotations require an individual rights review before commercial launch.
