HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY AND RELATIONSHIPS

Use the encyclopedia to follow a place through time, trace a family across the Ages, or connect a journey to the events around it. The same name can change its significance as kingdoms fall, settlements move and older histories become memories.

Read across the Ages

The First Age histories follow the wars against Morgoth and the destruction of much of Beleriand. The Second Age brings Númenor, the making of the Rings and the war of the Last Alliance. The Third Age provides the setting of Bilbo’s journey and the War of the Ring. The Fourth Age is principally approached through the ending and appendices of The Lord of the Rings; it is not the subject of a completed sequel.

These broad divisions are a reading framework, not a substitute for the chronology in Appendix B. References to events before the Sun, or to the wider creation history, require their own context.

Explore responsibly

Place descriptions and relationships are public. Manuscript variants should be labelled, and film geography should not silently replace the books. An original atlas and interactive timelines remain later development tasks; no copied Tolkien map is presented here.
