Event / announcement: Announced 21 September 2026; dedication planned for spring 2027
J. R. R. Tolkien is to receive a memorial in Westminster Abbey’s Poets’ Corner. The Abbey announced the project on 21 September, with a dedication ceremony planned for spring 2027.
Artist Stephen Broadbent’s design takes inspiration from Tolkien’s Tree of Amalion. The proposed artwork will rise vertically within a stone pillar and include wood from the black pine associated with Tolkien at Oxford’s Botanic Garden, which was felled in 2014.
The announcement places Tolkien’s commemoration alongside that of his friend C. S. Lewis. It also looks ahead to a year marking ninety years since The Hobbit and fifty since The Silmarillion.
Wood from an Oxford tree will connect the memorial to a place in Tolkien’s own life. In the Abbey, that material becomes part of a public act of remembrance, bringing a personal association into a setting shared with other writers. The dedication is still ahead; the September announcement is the beginning of that commemoration, rather than its completed unveiling.
