The Last Alliance

The Last Alliance is the alliance of Elves and Men led by Gil-galad and Elendil against Sauron at the end of the Second Age. Its victory defeats Sauron’s immediate military power but leaves the One Ring undestroyed.

History and context

Following the Downfall of Númenor, Elendil and his sons establish kingdoms in exile in Middle-earth. Sauron’s renewed war brings Elves and Men into a combined campaign. The allied forces fight at Dagorlad and besiege Barad-dûr. The losses include Anárion during the siege, and both Elendil and Gil-galad in the final struggle with Sauron. Isildur takes the Ring from Sauron’s hand and retains it despite the counsel of Elrond and Círdan. The campaign’s outcome is therefore both a genuine victory and the beginning of a prolonged vulnerability. The Ring later escapes ordinary knowledge after Isildur’s death near the Gladden Fields.

Literary context and distinctions

The opening of the film adaptation condenses the war into an iconic sequence, which should not replace the fuller account in the books and appendices. The alliance also illustrates the importance of political cooperation without implying that all historical divisions were permanently healed. Its name is not a promise that Elves and Men will never again cooperate in any capacity. It identifies the great alliance at the close of the Second Age, whose survivors carry both its achievements and its unfinished task into the Third.
