Beruthiel (Unknown) was the wife of Tarannon Falastur 12th King of Gondor. She was described as “nefarious, solitary and loveless” it is not known why they get married, it could be a diplomatic marriage when Tarannon conquered realms outside of Gondor. She only wore plain dark clothes, disliking all colours and lived in bare chambers.
She disliked the smell of the sea so stayed in the King’s House in Osgiliath, originally she hated the cats that would follow her around. She began to enslave and torture them, training them to spy on people. Her lifestyle and cat spy ring became notorious in Gondor and became something of a folk tale Aragorn mentioned her over 2000 years later while traversing Moria with the fellowship.
“He is surer of finding the way home in a blind night than the cats of Queen Beruthiel.”
Eventually Tarannon exiled her from Gondor, wiping her name from the ‘Book of the Kings’ and put her on a ship alone and let it go adrift. Tarannon and Beruthiel had no children to take over the throne of Gondor.
Trivia-In Sindarin her name loosley means “Angry Queen”.
“She was last seen flying past Umbar under a sickle moon, with a cat at the masthead and another as a figurehead on the prow.”
